- Under 49 CFR 390.19, a motor carrier must file an updated Form MCS-150 whenever its information changes. You don't wait for your two-year deadline if something changes today.
When an Immediate MCS-150 Edit is Required:
If a carrier makes any of the following changes, they must update their profile right away:
Change in Business Name: If you change your legal "Doing Business As" (DBA) name or legal entity name.
Change of Address: Moving your physical office or your "principal place of business" location.
Contact Information: Changing your phone number or email address used for federal notifications.
Fleet Size: If you significantly increase or decrease the number of trucks (Power Units) or trailers you operate.
Type of Operation: If you change from being an "Intrastate" carrier (within one state) to an "Interstate" carrier (crossing state lines).
Cargo Changes: If you start hauling different types of cargo, especially Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) that weren't on your original filing.
Why Waiting is Dangerous
- Data Inconsistency: If a roadside inspector pulls over a truck and the name on the door doesn't match the FMCSA database, it can trigger an inspection or a fine.
- Insurance Issues: Insurance companies verify your MCS-150 data. If your fleet size or address in the federal system doesn't match your insurance policy, they may deny a claim.
- Safety Audit Risk: Major changes without an update can trigger a "New Entrant Safety Audit" or a focused intervention from the FMCSA because the government sees "unreported activity."
Stop researching and start hauling. We handle the paperwork so your carrier profile remains active, accurate, and protected.
